Church of Divine Love-Divya Seva Asramaya is a Southern outpost of the Colombo Diocese of the Anglican Church in Sri Lanka. The mission is the outcome of the deep commitment and hard labour of two pioneering women, the late Constance Mendis Jayawardena and Beryl Weerasuriya who shared the love of Jesus Christ with the poverty stricken people of Urubokka. Today it is a vibrant and growing congregation.
Divya Seva Chapel, constructed on a hillock in the shape of praying hands was dedicated on the 14th November 1964 by the late Bishop Harold de Soysa. At present nearly 120 men, women and children gather for regular worship and about 300 on festive occasions. Unfortunately, the Church Building is now in a very bad condition with the roof about to collapse, while the church itself cannot accommodate the growing number of people.
The parish is very keen to have a new building constructed in the very same location on this hillock which many climb up for their prayers, meditation, quiet time and reflection.
The estimated cost of the new building is approximately Rs. Ten million (SLR 10,000,000 or 69,000 USD).The congregation is willing to provide funding by way of materials and labour (shramadana) totalling to about Rs.1,000,000. To raise the balance money we look to faithful donors as we trust in the Lord, for with Him nothing impossible. We appeal to you for generous contributions.
All funds will be routed through the Bishop’s Office and acknowledged.
