(Update : 10th June, 2017)

The magnitude of the Disaster in Sri Lanka in May 2017 as a result of the torrential rains. Flash floods commenced after just two days of rains and along with the mud slides and heavy flooding wreaked havoc in 15 districts.  Breach of the Banks of the many rivers that Sri Lanka is blessed with coupled with unplanned and ill-advised stone and soil quarrying for development is considered to be some of the causes.

Amidst allegations that Sri Lanka – even though it faced a similar flood (lesser magnitude) one year ago – was not prepared for this disaster on many levels, the government, it’s troops, ordinary citizens and institutions including the Church have mobilised themselves to face the emergency the best they can (post-event) with the support of the donations flowing in from within the country and the international community.

(Old Article : 25th May, 2017)

We appeal to the churches to pray for those affected by the rising waters and the floods in various parts of Sri Lanka.

Some of our churches and many of our parishioners have been affected along with many others from all communities.

The Board of Social Responsibility is working on the prevailing situation and our clergy are assisting through providing meals and temporary shelter in our churches for those who need it.  So far the most affected is the Southern & Sabaragamuwa Regions.

The specific needs will be communicated as soon as we have a clearer picture.  Meanwhile, do NOT collect any items but use this time to get a group of lay people together and make all arrangements to collect relief items when required and volunteers who may be able to take a couple of days each to help in the disaster recovery efforts.  Keep your churches and parish halls arranged and on standby to accept displaced people if you are in the vicinity of an area that may be affected.  We need you! Be prepared to help!

Thank you!
