After much prayers and reflections, the Bishop of Colombo – Rt. Revd. Dhiioraj Canagasabey has invited Revd. D.K.Balakrishnan to be the 6th Archdeacon of Nuwaraeliya.
Revd. Balakrishnan is presently the Assistant Curate at St. Paul’s Church, Milagiriya.
We continue to uphold Rev. Balakrishnan in our prayers.
The Church of Ceylon joins all Sri Lankans in greeting the nation on this joyous occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Independence of our dear Motherland.
Our country has been blessed with abundant beauty and natural resources and a people who are generous, hospitable and intelligent. As we look back at the past seven decades, there is much that we can be thankful for, and many Sri Lankans that we can unreservedly be proud of. Foremost among these are our achievements in education, initiated through the reforms proposed and carried out by a great visionary. Education opened the door to the development and the impressive standards of our health care system, comparable to that of many richer countries.
In week from now this nation will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of her independence from the British, with pomp and pageant. Military parades, religious ceremonies, cultural festivities, stirring speeches and other self congratulatory events will be held.
I thought it fit at this time to share this reflection with my fellow country women and men because I have been much troubled by the emerging signs of aimless drift in the governance of this country that have appeared in the past few months. It is the sacred duty of all of us who love this country deeply to give heed to these warning signs, to call attention to the chaotic and open contradictions that are visible with each passing day, if we are not to stumble onto another disastrous period in the life of our nation.
The Episcopal Ordination and Enthronement of Ven Keerthisiri Fernando, Archdeacon of Nuwara Eliya as the 6 th Bishop of Kurunagala takes place on the Feast of the Epihany, Saturday 6 th January at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Kurunegala. Two Archbishops and six Bishops, both retired and still serving will participate in the service of ordination.
We experienced the joy of sharing the love of Jesus Christ with 160 Children of the Puwakpitiya Primary Tamil Vidyalaya Avissawella by having a Christmas programme on the 08th of December. This decision was taken by the entire staff last year, to forego having a Christmas party for the staff and their families and to share our love with others who deserve it. Therefore this year also it was organized by the welfare Society of the Diocese of Colombo with the help of the members of the welfare Committee and the staff of the Diocese. There was a warm welcome by the School Principal, staff and the children. Two welcome speeches were given by two children in English and Tamil respectively.
The staff Christmas celebration 2017, will be done in charity style for the second consecutive year at the Puwakpitiya Primary Tamil Vidyalaya in Avissawella, on Friday 8th December 2017.
The staff of the Diocesan Office will take the message of Christmas, once again to the less fortunate children in our society.
Hence the Diocesan Office and the Bishop's office will be closed on 08th December, 2017.
It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing away of Revd. Canon. Lloyd Weerasuriya.
The body will be brought to the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour (Unity Chapel) at 12.00 noon today, and will lie at the Cathedral till the funeral tomorrow.
The Funeral Service at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour tomorrow (18/11/17) at 3.00pm. and cremation at 4.00pm. at the Jawatte Cemetery.
