Disaster Situation in Sri Lanka
The numbers still displaced have now reduced to about 61,000 persons in 250 emergency centres from over 300,000 at the height of the disaster. About 100 persons still remain missing. Two shiploads of relief sent by the government of India has arrived. Australia. China, Japan, Pakistan South Korea and the United States have also announced cash and relief assistance. A preliminary estimate of the cost of the damage put it around 1.5 billion US $. The government of Sri Lanka has announced that those living in areas designated as being under threat from earth slips will be resettled in safer locations.
Update on Diocese of Colombo’s Response - Noon, Thursday 26th May 2016
The Co-ordinating Centres of the Diocese have been active since the 18th of May, manned by BSR me mbers and volunteers, communicating with Regional BSR’s, clergy and volunteers in the affected areas on the one hand and with the many local donors such as parishes, institutions, schools and individuals receiving contributions in kind, sorting, inventorizing, packing storing and dispatching them to the affected people.
Donations Received
From the three Anglican schools in Colombo, Bishop’s College, Ladies’ College and St. Thomas’ College as well as several urban parishes and individuals.
In addition to food items, drinking water and toiletries, we have received donations of Gum Boots and Water disinfecting tablets.
Despatched on 25th May
- 85 aid packs of mixed food items to Ja-Ela, Dandugama. Puttalam, Urubokka (Matara district Gampaha, Malwana as well as Vanathamulla in the City of Colombo
- 50 similar packs will be sent off today as well as tomorrow
Distribution is being done through our clergy and volunteers in collaboration with the “Grama Seveka” (Govt. Administrative officer for the Village/Ward)
