21st of May 2023 is an important milestone in the life of the Malayaha Makkal as we commemorate International Tea Day, and celebrate the dignity of the community that was brought to Sri Lanka nearly 200 years ago.

The Methodist Church of Sri Lanka, the Diocese of Colombo and Kurunagala of the Church of Ceylon and the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka have come together to commemorate this event and create awareness in the minds of the people of this country of their struggles.

The Malayaha Makkal is an integral part of the Church in Sri Lanka and has contributed immensely towards the character of the Christian community. We are grateful to all who have laboured tirelessly amongst this community, but also acknowledge our role in maintaining the status quo, which successive governments and companies perpetuated.

A joint ecumenical service will be conducted by the Malayaha Makkal at the Church of the Ascension, Bandarawela on the 21st of May, 2023 at 10.00am to commemorate International Tea Day.
